Barry Dick MW -Master of Wine and Winemaker
“Helping source, shape and sell bulk & bottled wine since 2006”
Barry combines 20 years experience in the core industry disciplines of winemaking and global wine buying with the prestigious Master of Wine (MW) qualification, along with a highly developed understanding of the UK market and consumer.

“I grew up in a seaside town on the north coast of Ireland with rugby, golf and surfing in my blood: grapes were to come later. My first love was rugby union, playing as a very average professional in my twenties. A bright career beckoned but having hung up my boots in 2000, the rugby world’s loss was the global wine trade’s gain.
Winemaking roles have taken me around the world from McLaren Vale in Australia to Languedoc in France, where I added fluent French to my professional skillset. I have been involved in making wines for small, premium producers (Lurton, France) to large, multi-national wine companies (Accolade Wines, Australia) and retailers (Sainsburys & Morrisons UK), as well as making and selling recognisable global brands such as Hardys, Kumala and Taste the Difference.
I passed the Master of Wine (MW) qualification in 2013, adding a global perspective to my winemaking experience. I finally realised my youthful ambitions by representing Ireland in the 2019 International Touch Rugby World Cup in Malaysia. My golf swing and surfing still need work.”
Services
Winemaking Adjustment
I specialise in adjusting the winemaking process to tailor-make wines according to their target consumer. Winemaking has a range of variables that affect the quality and style of the wine produced. I combine technical experience with knowledge of segmented consumer preferences to review the winemaking process, thereby improving its design to better meet your target markets and consumers’ needs.
External winemaking team input
Winemakers are typically very busy people, heavily involved in the production of wine from the vineyards to the bottle. Only rarely do they got an opportunity to escape the vineyard or winery in order to experience their target market and what those consumers are buying and enjoying in terms of wine quality and style. I am able to quickly integrate into a winemaking team, bringing market understanding of the wine consumer to bear and keeping the team on track to produce wines that hit the spot.
Global Sourcing
I have a global network of personal contacts who supply bulk and bottled wine around the world. This means I can find the best quality and style of wine for any project.
Benchmarking
Conversations that use tools such as consumer insight data and benchmarking are essential for gauging the relative value of a brand and review it against its competitive set. I lead and direct brand owners in making any necessary changes to wine quality and style in order to establish a favourable consumer perception. Ultimately, this provides the competitive edge needed to take a wine to the top of its competitive set.
Range Assessment
Presenting the best possible range to your consumer is key to commercial success. My knowledge of the full spectrum of wines that appeal to global consumers can be used in conjunction with your knowledge of local consumers. I draw on a range of techniques to develop your ideal wine range, from analysis of consumer data to cutting edge laboratory techniques that analyse quality and style fingerprints. This can be applied equally to a brand portfolio as to a full range at a supermarket.
Brand Enhancement
My involvement in your business, from improving wine quality and style to developing range assortment, can enhance its commercial reputation to the benefit of both parties. You will not only see the tangibles of your wine business enhanced, you can choose to add confidence to your wine business proposition by highlighting our collaboration to your customers or consumers.
